February is a time of year firmly planted between Resolution Season and Spring Fever. For us, February is full of reminders about what we love about living in Northern Alberta; Winter days that get noticeably longer and time to catch up with our Food Family and make plans for 2016. February might not immediately make you think of “local food”, but the truth is that we have a whole range of local products all winter long. Local Dairy We have great dairy from both Vital Green Farms in Picture Butte, and Rock Ridge Dairy in Ponoka available all winter. If Goat products are more your scene, Fairwinds Farm in Fort Macleod is your best source for fresh milks and cheeses. Local Grains Gold Forest Grains in Morinville continue to offer a great selection of heritage grains and flours year round. If convenience baking is more your speed, check out Strathcona Stoneground out of Ardrossan for blends and mixes. Local Meat Our wide selection of meat products come from local farms. Serben’s Organic Farm near Smoky Lake has all of your pork needs covered, Sunworks Farm in Armena is our favourite for chicken and beef cuts. Sand Springs Ranch in Lac La Biche and the Sangudo Growers Association round out our beef offerings. Local Roots and Shoots Don’t forget about all of the great cold storage root crops and greenhouse shoots we have all winter long. Talk about local loving! Recommit to your Food Family When you initially signed up to join The Organic Box Food Family, we asked you to commit to 13 deliveries. We also offer a 3-box trial membership to test out the service and familiarize yourself with our Food Family. We ask for your commitment up front and then take that commitment to our producers. We have an ongoing dialogue with our growers, bakers and makers to let them know what the upcoming weeks and months will look like. How much should they grow? How much should they plan to harvest and when? What kind of on-farm investments will they need to plan for based on our membership numbers? This February, our focus is all about our Food Family. With each box and down to each bite, the decision you made to join our Food Family is having positive effects on our whole food system. We are grateful for you! We are Growing Better Together!
