Take Action Today!

Thank you so much for your support of The Organic Box. Your membership and your purchase of our products provides direct support to the Organic food industry in Alberta and keeps more of your food dollar right here in your community. In 2011 that translated into $350,000 returned tolocal Organic vegetable growers in Alberta, and so far in 2012 we are at$100,000 already!

We know that the food economy faces significant challenges. For us in Organics, oftenraw food production in Alberta is undermined by structuralbarriers inour value chain. For example, Organic grain produced in Alberta is often exported to the United Statesasraw product and then re-imported back to Alberta asfinished cereals and grain products. Dairy is another example of a product that is produced raw in Alberta, exported to BC for processing and then reimported back to Alberta as finished goods. This adds unwanted costs to our food andadds additionalcarbon emissions and fuel use to thefood value chain. It is also a lost opportunity forAlberta in terms of economic diversification away from oil and gas, reduced manufacturingcapacity, and job creation.

Ibelieve that the wider industry has embraced this challenge and 2012-2015 will be a period of investmentand growth in the processing and distribution segments of the Organic food value chain. In Alberta we already have examples ofmore integrated food production - Prairie Harvest pastas and Honey Bunny products are processed here in Northern Alberta using raw inputs from Alberta Organic growers. A consumer who is committed to supporting local food should be asking where his or her processed food comes from as well as his or her potatoes. At The Organic Box, we are working on an updated product catalogue that will give you specific and precise information about the processing origins of our grocery items so you can make informed buying choices for more than justtraditional market products.

However, the mega-processing corporations have a massive head start on us and a huge market position. <a title="Organic Alberta" href="http://www.organicalberta.org">Organic Alberta, the council that represents Organic food producers in Alberta, has several key programs under development to advance and build the processing segment of Organic Food production in Alberta starting this year. As a member of the executive committee and the treasurer of the Council, I help to steer the organization both fiscally and programatically. But we need your help. Much of the grant money that we hope to access to fund these programs requires our own fund matching dollars and we rely on donations and memberships to support this.

You can help usbuild our warchest by buying an Organic Alberta cookbook from The Organic Box, joining the council as a 'Friend of Organic' or making a donation.

Learn about ways you can support Organic Alberta here: http://www.organicalberta.org/join-us/

Find out more ways to buy local organic food by using the Organic Alberta Roadmap: http://www.organicalberta.org/organic-road-map

Ultimately, by purchasing more of your food items from local organizations such as The Organic Box or at local markets, you are injecting your dollars into the local Organic food economy and giving us much needed financial support that we can use to expand our industry. My vision is Organic food that is grown, processed, distributed and sold right here in Alberta, by Albertans. Help us to realise that vision in any way you can.
