The Start of Our Market Season

May 19th is our first farmers' market - we'll beat the south end of the City Market at 104 Street in Edmonton. This year we will be at several markets including the Southwest Market near Terwilligar. Markets give us the opportunity to offer certified organic fruits to market customers to compliment the certified organic vegetables offered by our growing partners in the Capital Region. This year we will also be offering the cherries, apples and other fruits grown at our own orchard, Just A Mere Organic Farm in Creston, B.C. Come visit us at the market and say hi! This Saturday I will be manning our tent with Strawberries from Esteban Martinez and Blueberries from the France Fruit Ranch, both from California. I also have some great 2011 BC apples, the end of last year's harvestand still in great shape.

In the box this week you'll find spring greens from both Peas on Earth and Sunrise Gardens near Edmonton. From further south we have fava beans, yams and our winter standardbrocolli. Fava beans are avery important crop to Organic Farmers. Planted in the fall, they provide nitrogen fixing to the soil and as a first spring crop they prepare the soil for more taxing crops like squash, carrots and cauliflower for later in the season. Often they are simply ploughed right into the soil as green manure. However, Eduardo Martinez harvests his and sends them north to us.We hope you enjoy them and give them atry. Like Kale, once you incorporate them into your regular diet you will find they are an excellent vegetable and source of nutrients for your family.

Your feedback is very important to us. As we adjust to our new work environment and warehouse, and implement new processes and technologies to further improve our quality and service, I encourage everyone to use the 'Rate Your Box' feature on our website to give us feedback. Over the past two years this has been an excellent tool to give us instant feedback on how we are doing, and I am keen to find out how our products are reaching you and how they are working in your kitchen. As always, we maintain our 100% satisfaction guarantee so if something isn't up to par, please let us know so we can make it right.

Havea Great Week!

Danny.
Founder, The Organic Box.

Featured LocalProducers

Peas on Earth

With their farm right outside of Edmonton, Eric and Ruby Chen are true local farmers. Certified Organic in the year 2000 they have been a mainstay at Farmers' Markets and a hub for local organic produce. The Organic Box and Peas on Earth have had a close partnership sincewe opened andwe areonly growing closer (and bigger) together. This year Peas on Earth has been able to supply us with mixed lettuce greens, green onions, and arugula much earlier than expected and we are super excited about it.Earlier than ever the Capital Regionis able to produce and enjoy local organics, a true sign that the organic market ishealthy, and expanding... thank you so much for supporting it! Enjoy fresh salad greens, arugula, green onions, and the ever famous rainbow carrots from Peas on Earth this week and look forward to much more over the2012 growing season.

Sunrise Gardens

Based in Onoway, Alberta, Sunrise Gardens is a family operated and certified organic farm. Dawn makes weekly deliveries to The Organic Box to provide all of us with fresh grown sprouts, microgreens and specialty greens... and over the coming months we will be treated to some other goodies such as patty pan squash and carrots with tops. Right now Sunrise is preparing aspecialty salad mix that is full of kale, lettuce leaves, chard, spinach, cilantro, beet greens, microgreens, and pea shoots... it's the perfect side dish, sandwich topper, or salad mix. Goat Milk, Goat Cheese, Chevre, and Goat Yoghurt! Fairwinds Farm is based just south of Calgary and are the purveyors of some of the finest organic goat products that we can find! Ben and Anita Oudshoorn have been farming together for over 25 years and started perfecting their goat milk/cheese/yoghurt production in 1999.
