Seasons' End.
Thanksgiving weekend can mean many things to many people - to us it means the end of our season and the wrapping up of the growing year. Hard frosts are coming, so all the apples will be picked by next week, the field crops are in and I will be making two more trips to BC to pickup fruit before we finish the year. Don't worry, there are lots of things going into storage and we have lots of great stuff lined up for the winter months from our friends down south. Abbie from our office just returned from a farm tour in Peru to take a look at the banana operations down there and get a feel for how our fair trade banana project is progressing. Take a look at the box this week! Fantastic! So much local organic food to choose from. As a food distribution and marketing program we are estatic with the reponse we've had to our products and the expansion this has fueled for our growers. This winter we have lots of exciting projects planned, including a foray into organic meat distribution, continued inroads into processed items like Edmonton-made baked goods, soups, frozen peas and carrots, and pizzas, plus enhancements to our order management workflows and better handling of inventory shorts and substitutions. We're also working with the Organic Alberta Council and Alberta Agriculture on a distribution project to find ways to be more efficient in how we move our products around the province - as an industry we spend way too much on transport and this translates into higher costs for everyone down the line. With so much organic food shipping around western Canada we need to get smarter about transporation. At The Organic Box we are always growing, always looking for ways to get better, and always trying to find ways to get more of your shopping basket filled by Alberta and BC food producers. We can do it! You are helping! Thanks so much and all the best for your Thanksgiving break. Havea Great Week! Danny. Which in reality probably won't change as just like everything else our supply is seasonal. Now is the season though for apples and the last of the local field tomatoes! In the 'Bulk Cases' category of the Organic Market you can see what we have available this coming week which includes: 10 lb case of canning tomatotes from Meadow Creek Farm 10 lb case of jonagold apples from our own farm in Creston, BC. Danny drove these back to our warehouse himself!

Tea
When the weather gets chilly there in nothing to look forward to more than a hot cup of tea to warm up. VitalyTeas Ltd. is an Edmonton based company that uses local, organic herbs in their tea blends, and all other tea ingredients are sourced fair trade, and organic! Their teas are bagged with whole leaf tea through a pyramid bag that is environmentally friendly and helps the tea steep faster. Wholesome, goodness, comfort, all in a cup. If you're a fan of loose leaf tea, Earth Tea provides us with local herbal teas such as Raspberry Leaf, Mint, Camomile, and an herbal blended tea from Chickadee Farms. Delicious.
