The Cherries Have Arrived.

It has been a long year of ups and down - the rainy weather in June threatened to ruin us and the neighbours said we couldn't do it, but the crop is in, the quality is excellent and the cherries are here in Edmonton. Miranda and I have been in Creston for the past several weeks pushing pushing pushing to get ready for the start of picking and last Thursday our pickers arrived to camp on the farm and we started harvesting the first inspected, transitional organic cherry crop in the history of the Creston Valley. We are making significant investments in the community and our farm and have created several newjobs. It is a good news story for a town that has been hit hard by these economic times.

Its time to buy some cherries

<a href="#" onclick="try{window.open('/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/cherries_cluster.JPG', 'MyImage', 'resizable=yes, scrollbars=yes, width=790, height=580')}catch(e){};return false;" onkeypress="this.onclick();" title="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/cherries_cluster.JPG">

We are so proud of our product and the team that put it together for us! If you have been buying cherries at the grocery store or somewhere else, now is the time to buy them from us. I've been selling these at the markets and to other farmers, and the consensus is that our growing practices, the care and attention paid by our team, and the non-industrial processes we use to pick, sort and ship this fruit has produced a clean-tasting, high sugar cherry that has trouble finding its peer. We are including a 5 pound bag in everyone's box this week for you to enjoy with your family. There are two varieties - Rainier (yellow and blush) and Skeena (dark red). The Rainier is a yellow cherry with high sugar that blushes under sunlight. It is extremely fragile and has the same surface strength as a blueberry. The Skeena is a dark, hearty red cherry with a thicker skin and fuller flesh. Make sure you try both. At the end of August we will be picking sweethearts - these are the last cherry of the season and are known as cotton candy fruit.

We are also growing 2 acres of apples and 4 acres of squash, pumpkin and cantelope. Those are coming along nicely and we expect to have a pumpkin for everyone this thanksgiving.

Bulk Cherry Boxes

We want to sell lots of cherries this year so we've put together a fantastic bulk 5 kg consumer box for the Edmonton market - combine this with a <a title="simple cherry pitter " href="http://www.thebay.com/eng/search/EntireSite-cherry_pitter">simple cherry pitterand you have everything you need to make cherry heaven. Remove the pits, freeze in bags and you will have cherries all winter long. It is $38 for either a box of Rainier or Skeena. Look in the Featured Products section on the Choose Your Box page to add these to your order this week!

<a href="#" onclick="try{window.open('/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/5kg%20retail%20box.JPG', 'MyImage', 'resizable=yes, scrollbars=yes, width=790, height=580')}catch(e){};return false;" onkeypress="this.onclick();" title="5kg box"><img src="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/thumb_5kg retail box.JPG" border="0" alt="5kg box" title="5kg box" />

Havea Great Week!

Danny.
Founder, The Organic Box.

Featured LocalProducers

The last of the cherries! :(

Last year Danny and Miranda (founders of The Organic Box) boughtour cherry farm just outside of Creston, BC. In the past year they have worked tirelessly to turn the land over into organic soil with the help of Margaret Malyk (the daughter of the original farm owner).

It has been an amazing journey and the past month has been spent madly selling cherries and enjoying them with our members. Whether you're an old customer, a new one, a friend at one of the markets that we frequent, or came in on a whim to taste what all the fuss was about... thank you so so much. Thank you for helping support our new venture, and keeping us going.

In the final week of cherry production we havetwo varieties available:Sweetheart and Skeena.The super special deal of 5 lbs of these tasty treats is still on. Get ready to enjoy the last of the cherry summer. It has been a really good time.

Patty Pan Squash:

A couple of our local farms have been sending us some of these unique squash in the past few days and you will get to enjoy them next week too! You may not know what to do with these when you receive them, but rest assured they are extremely easy to cook, very versatile, and absolutely delicious. They are popular in French cuisine and have a very mild, buttery taste.

Small patty pan squash do not need to be cut, large ones are best quatered and they are fantastic steamed, fried, grilled, roasted... they are very much like a zucchini in their versatility and are wonderful sprinkled with butter, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese.

This week they are coming in from Sunrise Gardens in Onoway, AB!
