Thinking about the Weather

Its one of Canada's favourite pastimes - musing and chatting about the weather. For some of us, weather is a critical component of our business and we think about it all the time. Lately, I've been noticing later springs, longer falls, and short, more intense winters. Moisture levels in the soil are extremely low this year, and the near-zero temperatures are fabulous for being outside but terrible for soil health. In Northern climates like ours, we rely on intensive periods of snowfall to rehydrate and protect our soil, and subzero temperatures to kill many unwanted pests by freezing insect eggs and weed seeds. This week, the lack of snow coverand extreme winds are having a devasting impact on our soil - drying out the top layers and blowing them away. We are hoping for lots of snow and cold temperatures soon so we can minimize the impact to our growing next year. Soil health and soil improvementare the foundation of Organic farming and nothing is more important to us.

Speaking of the weather, please ensure you have updated your delivery instructionsfor cold weather. Last winter we were lucky to haveonly a few frozen boxes butthis year we are hoping to have everyone'sinstructions on file so we never lose any food to freezing.

Give the Gift of Health this Holiday Season

Wondering what to get your friends, family, or employees this holiday season? A favorite food that reminds us of the holidays in the mandarin orange. There is something special about unwrapping the paper, and peeling the orange. I remember trying to peel mine into elephant shaped skins. This week, there isare mandarins in every box. These oranges come from Lishu Farm is located in Baoningqiao Village, Hunan Province, China. The total area of this organic mandarin orchard accounts for 18.7 ha and it is a 100% organic farm. The organic mandarin orchard is certified according to USDA standards. Once harvested, the mandarins are shipped bulk to Vancouver, where they are boxed in a certified organic packing house.

You can add mandarin orange slices to your favorite dessert, or to any salad. My favorite is a pomegranate seed, mandarin orange, spinach salad. You can also try a mandarin vinaigrette dressing. Mandarins are a great hand held snack in lunches or at the office.

Important Changes to Some Delivery Days and Times

Thank you so much for your support of The Organic Box. As we enter our second winter, we are implementing some changes to our delivery dates and times. One of our goals is to make the delivery of The Organic Box a family event, where parents and children unpack the box together and discover what new and exciting foods have arrived each week. As our routes become increasingly congested, we find that our delivery times are becoming later each week. Often we arrive after 8pm and families miss this opportunity to open the box together. The onset of winter driving conditions also results in delays and we are delivering until 10pm in some instances.

Therefore, we are moving some Wednesday and Thursday evening delivery routes to Saturday afternoon. We have now added a Saturday warehouse and delivery shift to our weekly schedule and your box will be packed on Saturday morning and delivered in the afternoon. This change will also allow us to offer service to the Edmonton Garrison, a long-time goal for both our team and many military families living on the base. If this change affects you, we have already been in touch. You should see on your Choose Your Box page an updated delivery date reflecting a Saturday drop.

Featured Producers

Sunrise Gardens
Onoway, AB

Sunrise is a family operated, certified organic farm. They have been In operation since 2002. They sell a wide variety of produce, specializing in gourmet vegetables and specialty greens such as wheatgrass, sprouts and microgreens.

This week, every box has a clam of micro-mix salad. This blend contains some of all the different sprouts and shoots they grow- Broccoli, Daikon Radish, Sugar Pea, Sunflower and Buckwheat. The blend is highly nutritious, fresh and flavourful, great to use as a salad on its own, mixed into your favourite greens, in wraps and sandwiches or as a garnish with anything on your plate. Enjoy!

Pet Grass: Cats and dogs love to graze on the fresh wheatgrass. There is a high nutritional value in the juice of the wheatgrass, as well as a high fibre content. Once at home, the small pack of wheatgrass should be placed in a dish or tray and watered from the bottom, 1 cup of water every 2-to-3 days. The grass will continue to grow for 3-to-4 weeks. Often, our pets keep the grass well trimmed by regular grazing, but if necessary the grass can be cut with scissors to a length of 3-to-4 inches and will continue to grow, just as a lawn would. The grass should not be placed in direct sunlight, and requires just a minimal amount of ambient light to grow well. Next to your pets water dish is convenient for them and is a helpful location for remembering to water the wheatgrass pack. The wheatgrass can also be fed to pet rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and lizards. Birds and reptiles enjoy playing in the tall grass as well.

Prairie Harvest
Edmonton, AB

Alberta is the wheat region.
