Proposition 37 - What is it and why we should care.

It isthe night before the US Election, and all through the Organic Industry we are more interested and more apprehensive about a minor vote in California than who will be the President of The United States next year. In California, a battle over a ballot initiative called Proposition 37 has been waging away. Perhaps some of you have heard of it, but for those that haven't, it aims to change food labeling laws in California to requirefood containing Genetically Engineeredingredients to belabeled as such.

While this seems like an obvious issue of consumer choice, the battle has been angry, hostile and negative. Monsanto, Dupont, Pepsico and Bayer Cropscience have spent over $17M on advertising to fight against this initiative, which has seen a total 'No' budget of $44M compared to the 'Yes' campaign's $7M. Over 90% of the money raised to fight this initiative has come from outside California. The basis for the 'No' campaign focused on consumer pricing. They have claimed that the average household food bill in California will rise by $400 a year if the proposition passes and this message is having an effect. Popular support from the initiative has crashed from 67% in September to a dead heat tonight. We don't know which way the vote will go tomorrow on election day.

Most of Europe and even Japan have introduced laws to require GE products to be labeled. Proposition 37 would also prohibit GE foods to be labeled as 'natural'. In the Organic industry, by definition our products cannot contain GE ingredients and so we are less threatened by the campaign to hide these ingredients from consumers of conventional foods. However, the label 'Natural' is of great concern. Labeling a product 'Natural' implies a level of quality that is not measured, inspected or maintained. Any food product can use the term 'Natural' without control or oversight and our industry feels that this is misleading and confusing to consumers, and when instances of truly unnatural foods being represented as natural are exposed, the negative public perception has an impact on the credibility of our industry and the rigorous 3rd party verified, federally regulated standard that we have built toensure that organic products are truly organic.

Regardless of which way the vote goes tomorrow, as a consumer in Alberta I would always encourage you to be suspicious of products labeled 'Natural' or 'All-Natural'. Check the ingredients. If you see corn or soya products, in all likelihood theycontain GE materials.88% of corn and 94% of soy produced in the United States is Genetically Engineered. If youwant to be assured that there is noGMO in your food, choose certified organic.Until North America chooses to catch up with the rest of the modern world and label itsfood, organic is the only guarantee we have that the food is truly'All-Natural'.

Its time for Winter Delivery Instructions

On my last trip back from BC, I ran into some pretty snowy highways coming through the Rockies andit reminded me that winter is upon us. Please remember that our normal delivery hours are noon to 10pm, so if you are expecting your box and it is getting dark, please turn on your porch light for our drivers to see. If we can't see your house number or if your front steps aren't safe, we will have trouble getting your box of food to you this winter.

Its also time to start thinking about winter delivery instructions. Your box won't survive in -10C weather for more than 30 minutes outside, so please start thinking about winter conditions and how you want your box delivered. Some options include:

We can put it in your garage if you have a keypad entry system.

We can leave it with a specified neighbour if you aren't home.

If you aren't home, we can bring it back to the warehouse and you can pick it up from our warehouse on Wednesday to Fridays during business hours and 9-1pm on Saturdays.

Something else creative that you can devise!

Boxes without winter delivery instructions will be left on the front step if you aren't home, so please take the time to update your instructions and let us know what you would like us to do for you.
