Think Local, Act Global

Last week I wrote about the changing weather patterns we've been seeing lately and what it could mean for our food production here in Western Canada. Tonight, I am at our farm in Creston looking at 15 cm of snow that fell in a single day, when only yesterday it was 7 degrees and sunny in the orchard. I remind myself that single weather events do not make a pattern but no one around here can remember shifts and changes in our micro-climate as severe as we are seeing this year.

In winter, we rely heavily on imports to sustain our food system across all of Canada and the Northern United States. Where this food comes from and who produces it are important questions to ask, and at The Organic Box we work very closely with our partners in our supply and distribution chain to find those producers in California, Mexico and further south who are independant, farm their own land, invest their profits back into their communities and act locally in their values and priniciples. This means we are heavy supporters of the fair trade fruit program that has been setup by Discovery Organics in Vancouver. Most of the citrus, berries, avocados and mangos you see from us during the winter come from fair-trade, certified organic producers. Our very special bananas are available year-round from BOS, our partner in Peru. BOS is a growers collective that is both fair trade certified and certified organic. Our bananas are packed especially for us we are so glad to have them.

Learn more about BOS here: Featured Producer Profile

There has been record rainfall in the BOS region of Peru and our producing partners are under water. Entire banana plantations have been lost to mud slides and flooding. This means we'll be gapping on bananas in about a month once we've used the supply we have now. But more urgently, this also means that these small, independant producers are facing destruction both of their crop and their livelihood. They do not have a major industrial grower like Dole or Chiquita standing behind them and crop failure insurance like what we have here in Canada is not generally available. These producers need our help. Please buy a Flood Relief Mango this week. 50 cents from each mango sold will go directly back to these producers. No fundraising overheads or other administration costs. We will be issuing a cheque and sending it directly to Discovery ourselves. Read more below.

Miranda and myself, plus our staff of 18 and our extended food family of over 100 producers and farming families are so grateful for your support of The Organic Box. We are working so hard to change the way people eat and the way our food is grown, and your membership with our program is the most important link in the chain and we thank you for it.

All the best,

Danny.

Featured Producers

<img title="Mango" alt="Mango" src="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/Mango Relief.jpg" />

<img title="Mango Kents" alt="Mango Kents" src="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/mango kents.jpg" />

  <img title="Mango Relief 01" alt="Mango Relief 01" src="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/Mano Relief 01.jpg" />

Flood Relief Mango Program!

There has been devastating flooding across all regions of Peru. The worst damage has occurred in the desert growing areas in the North, that haven’t seen a storm like this in 50 years. All the producers of the organic Fair Trade bananas, mangoes and avocados we carry have been affected. News of the flooding may not be prominent in the media here, but we still want to do our part to help out a region of the world we rely on for tasty fruit that we otherwise would not have access to. As a result, we and our suppliers have come up with a support campaign to help our friends in need.

50 cents from the purchase of every mango will be going towards the disaster relief program set up to support small-scale farmers and their families struggling through this natural disaster.

We understand that we have had few weeks of poorer-quality mangoes, and appreciate your patience. We’ve switched varieties to the delicious Kent mango. A sweet and tangy variety with light flesh and an emerald skin. Some were cut open for lunch this week and they are absolutely amazing and we guarantee you'll love them too.

We appreciate your continued support for our farmer family and your commitment to helping the organic community in their time of need.

    <a title="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/frozenraspberries.jpg" onkeypress="this.onclick();" onclick="try{window.open('/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/frozenraspberries.jpg', 'MyImage', 'resizable=yes, scrollbars=yes, width=790, height=580')}catch(e){};return false;" href="#">

Frozen Raspberry Sale

Roy's Raspberries is a family run farm just outside of Edmonton.
