BC Organic Fruit - almost there.
Local Organic Vegetables are in full swing now. We've got the first crop of beets from Peas on Earth and loads of local greens for everyone. Enjoy these now and make sure you dig out those salad recipes. Feel free to share some good ones on our Facebook page too! If you are a farmers' market regular, you'll have noticed that the BC fruit has started to appear at the conventional fruit vendor stands. Don't worry! Ours is coming too. Organic fruit can take 2-3 weeks longer to ripen than conventional grown, so we have to wait a little longer. But it will be worth the wait so hold on tight. In the meantime, we have some organic summer fruit from California to tide us over. Here are the projected harvest dates for some of the BC fruits we will be bringing you this summer: Cherries: July 8 Apricots: July 14 Peaches: July 15 Blueberries: July 12 Sunrise Apples: August 15 As soon as this fruit comes off the farms we will be bringing it you. The Summer Fruit Box Every year, we offer a $40 summer fruit box that is filled with BC orchard-direct fruit as an add-on to your regular order. This year is no different and we have put together a fabulous mix of items, both Alberta and BC grown. Cherries, Apricots, Blueberries, Melons, Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Apples, Pears, Strawberries and Saskatoons. You can add the box yourself using the "Choose Your Box" page, or pop us an email and we will add it to your regular order over the summer months. Click Here to send us an email if you like. If you have a fullvegetablegardens and are looking for just the fruit, you can switch your box to the Fruit Box for the summer months (Remember that we have a minimum order value of $50 for free delivery, otherwise its $5). Miranda and Danny are orchardists and Danny grew up in the fruit valleys of BC so we know how one of the perks of living in Western Canada is getting that awesome fruit bountyeach year, so let us bring it to you every week or other week automatically. By adding it to your regular delivery,we can also plan our harvests and orders with our growing partners and make sure we have enough for everyone. A Note About Shorts and Substitutions I know how frustrating it is to order something from us and then not get it, or to have something substituted. At The Organic Box, we prioritize freshness over inventory and so everything we offer is delivered to us the same week we ship it, even the non-produce items, and often there are only hours between receiving from producers and packing into boxes. We also book and order produce months in advance based on our projections of order volume. We absolutely hate not having what you ordered in stock, and try our very best to ensure that it doesn't happen, andwhen it doesthat you are given the appropriate credit. This summer we will be working on someenhacements to our systems - including notifying members in advance when we know therewon't be something in stock, andcommunicating betterbetween everyone in the food family from producer tocustomer when we do have an issue. However, there are things you can do to ensure you get theitems you want more reliably:

If there is something you order on a regularbasis, add it to your standard box by ticking the'Every Week' checkbox beside the item on the order pages. This will put it into our regular inventory projections and when we are making advance orders (especially dairy and bakery) we will know to order what you need. If you don't want it in a given week, you can always remove it from your box for that week only.

Order earlier in the week, pleasedon't leave it to the last minute. If you make your order early in the weekend, then we have more notice and can react quicker to get things that we need. Often Friday and Saturday customers are shorted items because they are ordered mid-week after we have received the majority of the food from our local partners and don't have enough time to react to late orders.

Use the 'Rate Your Box' page to tell us about your issues. Miranda and I built The Organic Box based on a hands-on approach to creating relationships between our food team and our members and we need your feedback to learn and improve. We have a continuous improvement culture and every week we adjust to improve over the last. Being unhappy with something we've done and not letting us know doesn't give us the opportunity to improve and get better. Please give us that chance. We try very hard to make it right for every box and want your feedback.

Havea Great Week! Danny. It is of the size that allows us to receive entire pallets of green packed bananas and ripen them on our own, in a natural and controlled environment. We are still getting used to it, and expect some bumps along the way as we refine our own schedule to ensure that you receive the best quality ripened bananas that are consumer ready. If you happen to receive overly green bananas you can help along with the ripening process by placing your bananas in a bowl (or paper bag) with an underripe tomato, or some apples. The ethylene gas expelled by ripening fruit will help speed along the ripening process for other fruit in it's vicinity. If you happen to receive over ripe bananas (we apologize), but these can still be salvaged for use in baking delicious banana breads or muffins, or will be wonderful in a morning smoothie. Enjoy your bananas. They are like none other in the world. Soundly and organicallygrown by a Fair-Trade cooperative in Peru. They are incredible tasty and ensure that the farmers growing them can live healthy, and happy. Hooray!
