A Moment of Truth for Organics

I have a very strong position on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and the role of this technology in our food system. My position is based on both belief and science. I am convinced that GMO food products have not been proven safe to eat and that the role of this technology must be limited or eliminated from our food system until such time as it is proven safe in long-term, peer-reviewed academic studies. I cannot accept that a lack of solid science showing harmful long term health effects means that we can conclude that these products are safe. But health risks aside, there are also a variety of reasons, ranging from the homogenization of our seed life-cycle, to the industrialization of our food system, to the marginalization and oppression of the small-scale agriculture businesses in our country, which lead me to conclude that we must act to stop the continued penetration of these products into our food supply.

Right now, we are facing an imminent and real threat to our entire Organic Industry - the registration and introduction of GMO Alfalfa in Canada. For me, GM Alfalfa is an economic issue as much as it is a health issue. We firmly believe that the registration and introduction of GMO Alfalfa into our ecosystem will do irreversible harm to consumer choice and the viability of our organic sector in Alberta and BC. Alfalfa (otherwise known as hay) is bee-pollinated and the <a title="contamination of organic cultivars is inevitable" href="http://www.cban.ca/Resources/Topics/GE-Crops-and-Foods-Not-on-the-Market/Alfalfa/The-Inevitability-of-Contamination-from-GM-Alfalfa-Release-in-Ontario" target="_blank">contamination of organic cultivars is inevitable. Organic hay will cease to exist, and all the products we love like organic meat products, dairy, oils, honey and even some fruits and vegetables will cease to exist. Alfalfa is the core plant that sustains our agriculture. GM Alfalfa must not be allowed.

How Does GMO Alfalfa Affect Our Farm?

<a title="Our fruit farm in Creston, BC" href="http://theorganicbox.ca/featured-producer-profile.aspx?id=534" target="_blank">Our fruit farm in Creston, BC is certified organic, and we rely on organic alfalfa products as inputs and for our well-being. Our export markets (including exporting to Alberta through The Organic Box) rely on our ability to have GMO-free products. GMO Alfalfa threatens our livelihood. I cannot stress how important this is to the future of my family and our children. This is an issue of consumer choice and market protection. The government is going to sacrifice our hard work and economic future for the sake of billion-dollar seed companies.

In my own consultations in both Alberta and BCI have yet to find an alfalfa grower who believes that Roundup Ready alfalfa is wanted or needed in our market, and there are high levels of concern that we will compromise our export markets to Asia and Europe through its introduction. Stand up for the right to choose and show your support. Speak now, because once it is introduced there is no going back. In 2004 we stopped the introduction of GMO Wheat. We can stop GMO Alfalfa. No one is going to do it for us, we have to take action.

How can you act?

National Day of Action - April 9. Currently we have over 100 families on our waitlist. We have broken the weeks intosegments and if you look at our signup page you will see what week we are projecting your first delivery if you signup today. Our mission is to bring our food to everyone and anyone who wants it and we pledge to bring as many people on as possible.

ALBERTA ORGANIC MILK

Last month we were saddened to learn that some of the organic dairy producers were withdrawing from the market in Alberta due to economic reasons. Personally, this frustrates me because Albertans drink more organic milk than we can produce in our province, but the problem is that the majority of milk consumed is being imported from British Columbia. We are proud to have two independent dairies in our product catalogue and I really encourage everyone to buy their milk from Alberta sources. You can buy from us, or check the <a title="Organic Alberta Council" href="http://organicalberta.org/organic-dairy/where-you-can-buy-local-alberta-organic-milk" target="_blank">Organic Alberta Council website for a full list of all places that you can get Alberta Organic Milk.

Milk on Sale

To put my money where my mouth is on our milk, we are continuing our price reduction on the 4L Rock Ridge organic milk bundle. This is the week to try out some Alberta Milk and see what you've been missing. Hormone, Antibiotic, Pesticide and Additive-free, this is clean, healthy milk that is worth every penny.

At The Organic Box we are always growing, always looking for ways to get better, and always trying to find ways to get more of your shopping basket filled by Alberta and BC food producers.
