A Fully Local Box

Its that time of year where the fall gala, macintosh and jonagoldapples are starting to come, the local veg is in full harvest, and we know that its time to dig into the local food revolution. For about six weeks a year we offer a fully local box and this is one of those weeks. Everything in the suggested box (except bananas!) is coming from Alberta and BC producers. This week is the peak of our production and we are proud to have so many options coming from families and growers so close to home. That said, we have a few imported options if you just have to have that lemon, jalapeno pepper or broccoli this week.

In our part of the world, it is vital that we take the opportunity to find local organic food and buy it when its available. Farms, even thosewhich are run entirely byfamilies,are businesses.If no one buys their product then they won't survive and agrobusiness will step in to fill the gap.

Are You Buying What We Are Selling?

The Organic Box is about more than just getting the exact food on your label. Our produce varies week to week and often quality is directly related to the weather, season and climate right here in Edmonton. The Organic Box is about giving people in Edmonton access to food grown by family and independent producers, and it is about creating a market for these growers (including myself and my family) so they have a larger venue to sell their produce besides farmers' markets alone. The average 10-acre fruit and vegetable farmer may onlymake $5,000to $8,000 a year at a farmers' market in Alberta after paying farming expenses and that is hardly enough to support a family and survive.

We are not a grocery delivery service. We are a marketing outlet for independent organic growers who are committed to expanding their production, improving their quality and reaching more people in the Edmonton region. Things do not always go smoothly for us and we are constantly looking for improvement. We do not have the volume or the capital to easily absorb mistakes. We do not act like a grocery store and claim any item that has even the slightest blemish for full credit. Quite often I rescue pallets of food that have been rejected by the major grocery stores to help our community of growers. Oranges that aren't orange enough. Blueberries that have 1% mould. Apples packaged with the wrong PLU code on the bags.

When I call The Organic Box a 'food family',I really mean it. When you signup for our service, you are making a commitment to us and our growers, that you will help them and help us develop this alternative food economy. We are truly a family, and we count on your feedback to help us improve. We want criticism, but we want it in a constructive and positive way that will help us be better, help our growers be better and continue to expand an industry that in 2009 was worth $3M to the Alberta Economy and by 2015 will be worth $20M. We are changing the world one apple or carrot ata time.

As always, we and our growers stand behind our products 100% and if you are unsatisfied or unhappy, please let us know. But be gentle. This food we are talking about is the product of months of hard work and we want everyone in our food family to be positive.

Havea Great Week!

Danny.
Founder, The Organic Box.

Featured LocalProducers

<img title="Spaghetti Squash" alt="Spaghetti Squash" src="/uploadedImages/009_-_This_Week/spaghettisquash.jpg" width="181" height="180" />

Spaghetti Squash!

With the onset of Fall we have a flood of winter squash coming our way.
